Apparently she is in a very bad way on one of the labour wards and is being watched carefully. She didn’t seek any medical attention when she fell pregnant and only presented to hospital during her labour. One of the chubby babies was born to a mother with heart disease. there were 2 babies around 4.3 kg in the nursery being looked after because their mothers were unwell & they looked so chubby and out of place compared to the scrawny babies surrounding them. The average weight size of a baby here is about 2.5kg. I spent some of my morning in the labour room and the rest of the morning in the nursery. When the time comes for payment they send out their debt collector equivalents and people have had to sell their children to pay the bills. However, most cannot read or write and the pharmacist often puts down any number her pleases – often 3-4 times more than the retail price – in addition they have a very high interest rate. People cannot afford to buy them over the counter so they get the medications placed on a ‘bill’. Apparently the pharmacists are pretty horrible people, sort of like loan-sharks. So people buy as much as they can afford or until they feel a little better and stop taking the medications or antibiotics. In India there is a huge problem with drug resistance because you can by medicines per tablet rather than in a box. I don’t know the exact quality (apparently the standards are pretty good) and will only take it if it is necessary but I find it incredible I could do that – no regulation – I could have asked for pretty much anything & got it. I walked up and asked for some tinidazole and they gave me a sheet and I payed very little for it absolute pittance for it. I realized the other day I didn’t have any tinidazole or metronidazole in case I got Giardia during my stay. You can pretty much go to the pharmacy and ask for anything – you don’t need a script. The pharmacies here are a bit of a worry. I went over the road to the pharmacy to buy some throat losengers and managed to find some orange strepsils which has been wonderful relief to my throat. Because its been irritated Ive been coughing a lot which is frustrating. I slept like a log last nice which was very nice but my throat is still very dry and sore. I think it is slightly improved from yesterday. I would really like to make tea for my family. I think that they misunderstood the notion of powdered drinks because if you could make powdered chai that easily then I think the street sellers would make no money at all. We have yet to find it though – despite our best efforts searching for it. It was delicious – at last my quest was over and I know where I can get chai if it is so desired! It was very satisfying.Īpparently there is powdered masala chai somewhere in the shops that the nurses use. He had disposable plastic cups and poured it straight into the cup when I indicated I didn’t want the glass cup. After devotion I went out by myself to the gate and found a guy who had some chai. I decided to continue in my journey in search of some decent chai.
